El Hongo branch of the Flying Samaritans was founded through a collaboration between UC Riverside and Cal State Fullerton students in 2005. The primary purpose of the organization is to provide health care to the under-served populations in Mexico. Students, physicians, physician assistants, dentists, nurses, optometrists, pilots and other caring volunteers, from many different states, travel monthly to medical clinics throughout Mexico to provide free health care to people who would otherwise have none. Both UCR and CSUF collaborate and represent the Driving Palomar Chapter of The Flying Samaritans Inc.
Our Mission
Our purpose is to provide health care to people living in the rural areas outside of Tecate, Mexico. Once a month, we open the El Hongo Clinic, located approximately 30 miles east of Tecate, Baja California. By assisting in administrating, translating, and taking vital signs, our members get the opportunity to experience medicine and another culture first hand. As a member, you may also experience the satisfaction that comes from an increased cultural awareness and a sense of teamwork through active participation.
